November 19: Todd Weber, John Wesley Powell historian, reenactor, will be our speaker at
this meeting. The program entitled, “Dear Emma”, and sponsored by the Arizona Humanities
Council, will have Todd portraying John Wesley Powell writing a letter to his wife, Emma, the
night before embarking on his 1869 journey of exploration into the “Great Unknown” which
was the Grand Canyon.
We also wish to honor Scott Wood, recipient of the 2011 AAS State Professional
Archaeologist Award!! Congratulations, Scott, for this well-deserved award for many years of
service as Tonto Forest Heritage Archaeologist and at Pueblo Grande and other venues.
Scott has also graciously accepted becoming our Professional Archaeology Advisor as Penny
Minturn accepted work in Hawaii in October.
Scott received the AAS Award at the October AAS State meeting in Benson, AZ, but our
Chapter wishes to show our appreciation in a special way at this meeting.
Following the meeting, members will be able to hike to a little know and rarely visited
petroglyph site. This will be a moderate 1.5 mile round trip hike led by BoB and Del
Wright from a trail head about 6 miles west of Payson.
Meet at the Church of the Holy Nativity at 10:00 AM. The address is 1414 Easy Street, at the
corner of Easy and Bradley, Payson. We meet in the Fellowship Hall there.
AAS State Meeting, Benson, AZ notes:
The Prehistory of the Southwest course offered by AAS is now updated and available for
members on a pdf file. Perhaps we can offer this course to members, especially new members
again. One can take this course with or without certification requirements.
Membership Renewals for 2012 are at the November and December meetings. Please make
every effort to renew at those times. Carolynn Walter will be accepting renewals!!
